Jyotish, also known as Vedic astrology or Hindu astrology, is an ancient system of astrology originating in Indian sub-continent. The term “Jyotish” is derived from the Sanskrit words “jyoti” meaning light or heavenly body and “isha” meaning lord or ruler. Thus, Jyotish can be translated as the “science of light” or the “science of heavenly bodies.”

It is rooted in the concept of karma, which suggests that our actions in past lives influence our present circumstances.

Jyotish (Indian Astrological system) is deeply rooted in the ancient texts of India, such as the Vedas, Puranas, and other astrological treatises. It is based on the belief that the positions and movements of celestial bodies, such as the sun (star), moon (earth’s satellite) and planets (sun and moon is termed as planets by astrologers while reading the horoscope chart). Jyotish has a profound influence on the lives of individuals and can reveal information about one’s personality, behavior, and life events.

The core principles of Jyotish involve the study of the birth chart or horoscope, which is a map of the celestial positions at the time of an individual’s birth. The birth chart is created based on the person’s birth date, time, and place. It consists of 12 houses (representing different aspects of life) and the placement of planets in these houses. Each planet is believed to govern specific qualities and influences different areas of life.

Jyotish practitioners analyze the birth chart to make predictions and offer insights into various aspects of an individual’s life, such as career, relationships, health, and finances. They consider the interactions between planets, the influence of different houses, and the aspects formed by the planets to interpret the potential outcomes and timing of events.

Key components of Jyotish include.

Birth Chart or Janma Kundli

The birth chart, or natal horoscope, is the fundamental tool used in Jyotish. It is a map of the celestial positions at the time of an individual’s birth. The birth chart consists of twelve houses (representing different aspects of life) and the placement of planets within those houses.

Planets

Jyotish considers nine main celestial bodies as significant: the Sun (star), Moon (satellite of earth), Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu (nodes of earth). Each planet is associated with specific qualities and influences various areas of life.

Houses

A horoscope has 12 houses.
The twelve houses in the birth chart correspond to different aspects of life, such as career, relationships, health, and finances. Each house represents a specific area and is ruled by a particular planet.

Yoga

Jyotish identifies specific planetary combinations, known as yogas, which can have significant effects on a person’s life. These yogas can indicate auspicious or inauspicious events and circumstances.

Dasha

Dashas are planetary periods that influence a person’s life at different times. Each dasha is associated with a specific planet and has its own duration. The interpretation of dashas is based on the position of the planets in the birth chart. Dasha’s main devisions are Mahadasha, Andterdasha and Prayanterdasha etc.

Remedies

Jyotish offers various remedies to mitigate the effects of negative planetary influences or enhance the positive ones. These remedies may include wearing gemstones, performing specific rituals, chanting mantras, or engaging in acts of charity.
